Here i stand writing to my blog today in a little bit of a predicament. I currently have no major sponsor, no job and no income. After chasing the tour all of last year and resigning a 3 year contract last July this is a fair ‘kick in the nuts’ as some would say.
I feel like i am 15 again applying for jobs washing dishes or waitering at restaurants, shock horror being 18 (almost 19) at that. Classified as an adult i would have though by now i would have my life at least somewhat together.
I had some major goals for 2013 which i now see as unachievable but i have decided i am going to spend the rest of this year doing things for myself. I want to improve my surfing on my own terms, work from the ground up on the foundations of my surfing, with the number one priority being: bringing the fun back.
I have always preferred free surfing big heavy waves with my friends over travelling to undesirable locations to surf a heat against aggressive people in shit waves and i think that shows in my surfing, i simply can’t do it. At the moment i think working on my free surfing is the way to go, the disappointment when i see good friends like Nick Ormerod surf there heart out for a year on the QS tour and qualify for the world tour but still be unable to find sponsor backing to get to the events pretty much sums it up for me.
I will always continue to support the people who have been there since day one and have done everything in there ability to help me succeed, Emerald Bodyboard Store has helped me since 2009 and still continue to support me even through this rough patch. As well as newly acquired support from Reeflex Wetsuits, Topheads eyewear and ReerEndz underwear.
I am hoping some major sponsorship is on the horizon but as for the short term i am job hunting and pit seeking as winter sets in on home turf, boy am i ready to get seriously tubed this season.
Cheers,
Sam
